Removing a tree in Burnaby: your questions
Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in Burnaby?
Only for a protected tree. With no development application, that's a conifer 30.5 cm (12 in) or more across, or a broadleaf tree 45.7 cm (18 in) or more, measured 1.3 m up the trunk. Replacement trees, trees kept under a covenant or landscape plan and trees in streamside areas are protected at any size. Once you apply to demolish, build, rezone or subdivide, any tree 20.3 cm (8 in) or more is protected.

Can I prune my tree without a permit?
Yes, if the pruning follows accepted arboricultural practice. Topping a protected tree or cutting its roots counts as damage, which needs a permit.

What happens if a tree is cut without a permit?
The City can require replacement trees, issue a ticket, or prosecute. On conviction the fine is $2,000 to $10,000 for each violation, and you still need the permits and fees for the trees removed.

My tree is dead or looks dangerous. What do I do?
A dead or dangerous tree above the protected size still needs a permit, unless a storm has left it about to fall. The City asks for the written recommendation of a certified arborist. Tell us about it and we'll sort out what's needed first.
