Removing a tree in City of North Vancouver: your questions
Do I need a permit to cut down a tree in the City of North Vancouver?
It depends on your zoning. If your lot is zoned GO, RS-1, RS-2, RS-4B, RT-1 or RT-2 (most houses and duplexes) and the whole trunk is on your lot, the Tree Bylaw doesn't apply. Everywhere else it covers trees 20 cm or more across, measured 1.4 m up. City trees, shared trees and your neighbour's trees always need permission.

When will the City approve removing a tree?
Outside a building project, only if the tree is dead, dying or hazardous (confirmed in writing by a certified arborist), interfering with utility wires in a way pruning can't fix, or blocking sewer or drainage lines (certified by a plumber or engineer).
